The North Sea Schools Network
1. The first phase of the North Sea Schools Sustainability Network began work in October 2007, and it will run until June 2009. This phase is a project for the 11-14 age range, focusing on sustainability and the environment. Following a successful proposal for Comenius funding, pupils are looking at the impact that individuals have on the environment and how lifestyle choices and decisions can make a difference. Schools in this group are from the countries England (lead school), Scotland, Norway, Germany, and an associate partner school in France. This group has now been working together for one term and the results can be seen on the website www.northseaschools.org <http://www.northseaschools.org/> The next meeting of this group is a meeting for teachers and pupils in Büsum, Germany in May 2008.
2. The second phase is in preparation and will involve a group of primary schools from the countries Scotland (lead school), the Netherlands, France, Norway, Denmark and England. This project will focus on sustainability and food. A preparatory meeting was held in Heerenveen, Fryslân, in November 2007. A proposal for Comenius funding is now being prepared, which will be submitted by 15 February 2008. If this is successful, the project will run from September 2008 until June 2010.
3. Shortly we will look at the possibility of a project for older students in the age range 16-19. An initial meeting will be held in Dundee in January 2008, to determine the way forward towards building a network and obtaining funding for the third phase of the Sustainability Network.
This project will run from October 2007 to June 2009. The lead school is Saxmundham Middle School in Suffolk, England. The project involves pupils in the first years of secondary schooling (11 – 14 years old), and aims:
- To share best practise in the use of School Councils and Eco committees in the design and implementation of environmental action plans.
- To show how sustainability results from people’s own life choices
A preparatory meeting was held in Suffolk, England on 30 November and 1 December 2006, with delegates from schools in Suffolk (England), Lille (France), Schleswig Holstein (Germany) and Stavanger (Norway). The kick-off seminar was held in Stavanger, Norway 1. - 4. October 2007, and a new meeting is planned to be held in Germany in May 2008.
