Aims

The aims of the Culture & Tourism Group are to stimulate cultural cooperation and exchange between the member regions around the North Sea, to create awareness of historical and cultural links among the general public, to strengthen the professional cooperation between the members in the fields of culture, heritage and tourism, and to stimulate increased cultural tourism activity around the North Sea.

Activities

The Culture & Tourism Group has 2-3 meetings annually. 10-15 regions regularly participate in the work of the group. Most members of the group are senior officers in the field, although some councillors also participate. The group aims at strengthening the cultural and touristic cooperation between the member regions of the North Sea Commission. In addition, the members benefit from the regular contact with colleagues from around the North Sea basin.

Conferences

The Culture and Tourism Group was responsible for a conference on North Sea culture held in Stavanger, Norway on 4-5 October 1995.

Now, a second conference, on the economic benefits of arts in rural areas is being contemplated. The venue of this conference will be Duff House in Banff, Aberdeenshire.

Projects

For some years, the implementation of the North Sea INTERREG IIC-programme and the promotion of cultural tourism within it has been the major issue on the agenda of the group.

The group itself has sponsored and promoted the following three projects so far:

North Sea Cycle Circuit

North Sea Viking Legacy

Kings of the North Sea

Currently, the group is preparing projects for INTERREG IIIB-funding. A project called "Elements Create People" is already being finalized, while further projects are being considered.

These include a project on artist exchange programmes, a North Sea Festival of Youth, a North Sea Festivals programme and North Sea Games. Improvement of exchange programmes between the members of the North Sea Commission is always being considered.
