RESOLUTION OF THE REGIONAL ASSEMBLIES

The regional assembly of the Region of ………………….. (country), meeting on ………… (date) in …………..  (place) has unanimously adopted the following resolution.

The European Council summit meeting under the Luxembourg Presidency in June 2005 will have to adopt the European Union’s financial perspectives for the 2007-2013 period.

We would like to stress how much importance we attach to the European Commission’s proposals on future regional policy, both in terms of the substance[1] and the resources to be devoted to it[2], which are the minimum required for making the policy credible.

We are convinced that the success of the Lisbon and Gothenburg strategies will be dependent on the extensive involvement of all public players, and not just on the efforts of central governments. Having a realistic regional policy is the only way to ensure that this objective is pursued in harmony with Europe’s territorial diversity.

We are warning European decision makers that any revision of these recommendations would have a highly negative impact on the extent to which we, as committed public European players, can rally our efforts. This is especially important now, because our Member States are just entering an active phase for ratifying the draft Constitutional Treaty, which promises economic, social and territorial cohesion.
